Behandlung mit Lachgas bei zahnärztlichen Eingriffen

Don’t be frightened of your dentist!

Using nitrous oxide we can make your visit pleasant - ideal for anxious children and adults.

What is nitrous oxide and how does it work?

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an odorless and colorless gas which is inhaled using a nasal mask during treatment. The gas mixture (ratio 1/3 N2O and 2/3 O2) is transferred into the blood within a few minutes and causes a kind of ‘floating’ state. It has a relaxing, calming and anxiety-reducing effect. The gag reflex is also reduced. You remain conscious and responsive.

As fast as the desired effects occur, they also fade away quickly. You can drive home by your own car within 30 minutes after treatment has ended.

The advantages of nitrous oxide

  • Anxiety is reduced
  • Sensation of pain is reduced
  • Leads to relaxation and deep calm
  • You remain conscious and responsive
  • Safest form of dental sedation
  • Accidental overdose is impossible
  • The depth of relaxation can be flexibly controlled
  • After 30 minutes you are fit to drive a car again
  • Different fragances are selectable
  • Ideal for cases with severe gag reflex
  • Recommended by pediatric dentists

Is nitrous oxide harmful or dangerous?

As nitrous oxide is completely exhaled after the treatment, there are no after-effects. In the more than 150-year history of nitrous oxide sedation, no human being has ever been harmed.

How is nitrous oxide used?

The nitrous oxide is administered using a nasal mask that is worn throughout the treatment.

The nasal masks comfortably worn and different fragrances eligible (e.g. strawberry, orange, bubble gum, mint, vanilla).

When must nitrous oxide not be used?

  • Pregnancy
  • Recently performed eye surgery on the intraocular vitreous body (vitrectomy)
  • Pneumothorax
  • Ileus
  • Drug addiction
  • Rhinitis, in case of obstruction of the airways
  • Sinusitis, mastoiditis, otitis media
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

How is nitrous oxide applied in children?

In children, nitrous oxide is helpful in case of treatment refusal. Today, it is almost impossible to imagine dental treatment without the use of nitrous oxide.

The procedure is appropriately explained as ‘magic air’ that makes them ‘strong and brave’ and feels like ‘diving in the sea’ or ‘floating like an astronaut in space’.

The willingness to cooperate is important. If the child voluntarily lies down on the treatment chair, puts on the nose mask and breathes exclusively through the nose, this can be a lasting and pleasant experience for all involved.
